15 Feb Painting and Sculpture
On February 15, 2025, Gastronomic Society of Türkiye visited the Türkiye İş Bankası Museum of Painting and Sculpture to admire the works of artists who paint the image of flavor. At the museum, located on İstiklal Avenue, they toured the exhibition Taste and Art, curated by association member Prof. Gül İrepoğlu. The exhibition explored traces of taste, the sociology of flavor, and culinary culture in painting.
Comprising six thematic sections, the exhibition presented a feast ranging from fields, vineyards, and gardens to still lifes, from market scenes to shops, from sea harvests to the preparation of food. A specialist art historian guided the Gastronomic Society of Türkiye through the exhibition.
After viewing the final section, titled Cânân ki Degüstasyon’a Gelmez—a reference to Orhan Veli’s famous verse, which depicted coffeehouses, restaurants, and dining tables—they proceeded to an afternoon rakı table at Sev-İç in Çiçek Pasajı, one of Beyoğlu’s classic venues. Originally Neşe Meyhanesi in the former Krepen Passage, Sev-İç moved to Çiçek Pasajı in the early 1980s and has since upheld the traditional meyhane culture, hosting intellectual gatherings in Beyoğlu. Glasses were raised in memory of the writers, illustrators, and artists who once sat at these very tables.
